I am Mayaskar Nair, the Founder of Inspiring Health Science Studies (IHSS) and a Grade 12 student at Reddam House Waterfall.

As I started out my personal journey to collate data points in order to decide if Medical Studies or any other related studies in the Health Science fields was something that resonated with me, I began with some job shadowing opportunities. These were meaningful and the Doctors I shadowed shared good information with me.

In building my community hours portfolio, I recognized that most of the community engagements I had was varied and not related to Health Sciences. Upon visiting a few Public hospitals, during my job shadowing experiences, I recognised that there is a way to earn community hours in a meaningful way, without impacting the daily operations of a ward. This is where I saw the opportunity to start putting together care packs, educational packs, take-home food packs and the like for patients in various hospital wards.

Stumbling upon this idea of serving a community need in hospitals, whilst having the opportunity to job shadow, is what sparked the idea of the project Inspiring Health Science Studies. This was a win - win for both the community and us as students.

This project creates the opportunity for high school students, like myself, to get involved, earn community hours and get clarity about our subject choices and career paths whilst we:

SERVE | LEARN | ENGAGE

This project is registered with the International Association of Human Values

SERVE

We identify a partner health care facility and enquire about a specific need they have in a particular ward. We fundraise to meet the need and earn community hours. ( E.g. Care packs, Education Packs, Food Packs etc.)

LEARN

When we deliver the goods to the health care facility, we get an opportunity to learn from the health care staff on duty through a mini lecture and Q & A session about their areas of specialisation.

ENGAGE

On a monthly basis we invite a guest speaker from the Health Sciences profession to share with us interesting break throughs, new research etc. Their aim is to inspire us with their personal journey and their contribution to health sciences.
